Calming our critical voice

Using EFT to Navigate a Critical Inner Voice and Overcome Feeling Stuck

We all have an inner voice—a constant dialogue running in our minds. At its best, it can be a supportive guide, but at its worst, it can be harshly critical, keeping us stuck in cycles of doubt, fear, and inaction. If you’re feeling unmotivated, trapped in self-judgment, or struggling to move forward, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as tapping, can be a powerful tool to shift your mindset and break through mental barriers.

Why EFT Works for Self-Criticism and Feeling Stuck

EFT is a mind-body technique that involves tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on an emotional challenge. This process helps calm the nervous system, rewire thought patterns, and create a sense of emotional relief.

Studies suggest that EFT can:

• Lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels

• Reduce anxiety and self-doubt

• Increase motivation and self-compassion

By addressing self-criticism and emotional blocks, EFT can help you move from stagnation to action.

EFT Tapping Script for a Critical Inner Voice

This script is designed to soften self-judgment, ease resistance, and boost motivation. Before you begin, rate your level of distress (0-10) and revisit it after the practice to gauge progress.

1. Setup Statement (Karate Chop Point on Hand):

Tap on the side of your hand and repeat:

“Even though I feel stuck and my inner voice is so critical, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

“Even though I feel like I can’t move forward, I choose to be kind to myself.”

“Even though I feel unmotivated, I am open to shifting my energy.”

2. Tapping Through the Points

(Tap 5-7 times on each point while saying the phrases.)

• Eyebrow: “I hear this critical voice in my head.”

• Side of Eye: “It tells me I’m not doing enough.”

• Under Eye: “It keeps me stuck in self-doubt.”

• Under Nose: “I feel so unmotivated because of it.”

• Chin: “I feel like I can’t move forward.”

• Collarbone: “This heaviness, this stuck feeling.”

• Under Arm: “What if I could release some of this pressure?”

• Top of Head: “What if I didn’t have to be so hard on myself?”

3. Positive Reframing (Second Round of Tapping)

Now shift toward new, empowering beliefs:

• Eyebrow: “I choose to be kind to myself.”

• Side of Eye: “I am open to a different perspective.”

• Under Eye: “Maybe I don’t have to be perfect to move forward.”

• Under Nose: “I release this pressure and give myself grace.”

• Chin: “I allow myself to take small steps forward.”

• Collarbone: “I am doing my best, and that is enough.”

• Under Arm: “I choose to encourage myself, not tear myself down.”

• Top of Head: “I am capable, and I trust myself to take the next step.”

4. Deep Breath & Check-in

Take a deep breath. Rate your distress level again. If needed, repeat the tapping sequence.

Your inner voice doesn’t have to be your enemy. With EFT, you can turn it into an ally—one that gently encourages you rather than holds you back. So, the next time you feel stuck, try tapping through your emotions and see what shifts!
